Debt Funds -Invest in Debt Funds. These funds invest in commercial papers, fixed deposits, Floating Rate Bonds, Company Debt, etc. So, the investment is safe and some of the fund has given excellent return over the last few years. The biggest advantage is that,  proceed from the sale of units is tax free in the hands of investors, if redeemed after one year. Few of the good funds are - Tata Floater, JM Money Manager Super -G, UTI Floating Rate ST.
  1. Small Property -Property prices have dropped in the last few months. But this is a real opportunity for an investor to purchase some good property at a bargain. Instead of taking loan from a financial institution, purchase a small flat ( may be a single room ) in cash. Rent out the property. Invest the rent in an SIP or Recurring deposit in a bank. In this way, your property value will increase as well as your investments from the rent received. If you can take some pain, try to find property at distressed sale. If you have any friend working in a home loan division of a financial institution, ask him/her to help you out. They will be more eager to help you as they might clear some long outstanding account with them.
  2. Govt. Sector Stocks - The new govt. has to boost up the economy by increasing the spending in Indian infrastructure. The biggest advantage of that is going to be enjoyed by the govt. sector companies. SBI is expanding it's branch network. BHEL is having enough orders for next three years. We might see restructuring of some of the petroleum companies. In short, Large Cap govt. sector companies are going to be more beneficial as the govt. has to increase its spending in infrastructure.
  3. Invest within Top Two Stocks of the Sector - If you are investing in paint industry, invest in Asian Paints stock only. Best companies of  the sector is going to be the major gainer once the economy recovers. Do not invest in in lower ranked stocks, as they will take more time to come in favour of investors.
  4. Alternate Source of Income -Invest some money to learn some skill, which you can monetize in future. Try to acquire a professional degree or diploma you can pursue as an individual practice tomorrow ( may be after retirement ) - like  law or website designing or any course as you deem fit. You may also start a small part time business in partnership with your wife or friend. You never know when these will become important as we do not know, when the next recession will be.
